About
Our Group’s Motto
“Explore new boundaries …
Be prepared for tomorrow …
Today!”
The 1st Portarlington Scout Group’s leaders make a promise to all current and new members that we will run programs that give our today’s youth every chance to prepare them for skills needed in later life.
We will incorporate this promise through playing games, camping, activities and more; but especially, through having FUN!
Should You Enrol Your Child in Scouts?
By enrolling your child in Scouts you are giving them the opportunity for fun and an educational experience above and beyond what the school system offers. In this respect Scouting is often referred to as non-formal education.
Scouting, which has been in existence since 1907, and in Australia since 1908, has the aim of developing young people physically, intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and socially. Children are accepted into Scouting from 6 years of age, and may continue through the different Sections until as young adults they reach the age of 26.
Scouting emphasises nature, adventure, citizenship, leadership and of course having fun.
From the Cub Section onwards, young people are gradually given more opportunity to work in small autonomous (but supervised) groups in order to develop leadership skills.

Mission Statement
To contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Promise and Law, to help build a better world, where people are self fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.
We achieve this by:
• Involving young people through their formative years in a non-formal education process.
• Using a specific method that makes each individual the principal agent in his or her development as a self-reliant, supportive and committed person.
• Assisting them to establish a value system based upon spiritual, social and personal principles as expressed in the Promise and Law.
Aim
The Aim of Scouting is to encourage the physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual development of young people so that they take a constructive place in society as a member of their local, national and international community.
Principles
The Principles of Scouting, as identified by the founder, Lord Baden-Powell, are that Scouts serve their God, act in consideration of the needs of others and develop and use their abilities to the betterment of themselves, their families and the community in which they live.
Behaviour and Discipline

All members are expected to behave well and appropriately. Inappropriate behaviour will not be accepted.
Generally speaking, minor incidents will be dealt with at the Leaders discretion (e.g. A simple ‘telling off’, sitting out the game, extra work). More serious examples, in particular, bullying and fighting, will result in the parents being contacted.
Older members, and in particular Sixers and Seconds/Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders, will be expected to set a good example to younger members of the Group.
Occasionally we will have members in the Group with special needs. If your child requires any additional help with any activity, or has particular needs please speak to one of the leaders.
A Scout’s Obligations
Members of the 1st Portarlington Scout Group are expected to take an active role in the activities of the Group.
He/she is expected to attend every Meeting, unless ill or away. A large number of events are organised throughout the year, and it is hoped that members will attend most, if not all these events in order to take advantage of the wide range of opportunities available.
